Introduction

Pulau Layang Layang and others in the South China Sea within the Continental Shelf of Malaysia form unique and rich habitats harboring an overhelming diversity of the marine communities. The island is renowned as one of the best diving spots in the world. Pulau Layang Layang has 13 dive sites, with fascinating macroinvertebrates, beautiful coral, spectacular pelagics such as schools of dogtooth tuna, barracuda, dolphins and hammerhead sharks. These are located outside the lagoon (outer reef) within 20 minutes boat ride from Layang Layang Island Resort. There is not very much to do apart from diving and snorkelling. some of the tourist have taken to bird-watching, as there is a seasonal nesting bird population. The attraction for bird watching is less than diving, and it is an activity that fills up time for those who cannot dive on last day of their stay at Pulau Layang Layang. The island has also became an important site for biodiversity and conservation studies.
