Vision
To be the Base Station for all research activities in the
Pulau Layang Layang Archipelago, Malaysia
Mission
To facilitate the implementation of research activities in Biological Diversity and Oceanography in Pulau Layang Layang Archipelago, Malaysia by national and world scientists.
MArine Research StAtion Layang layang (MARSAL)
MARSAL is intended for research in biodiversity, fisheries,
coral reefs, biotechnology and marine geology. The
scientific research activities planned for are in the fields
of marine pharmacology, conservation of biodiversity,
physical and biological oceanography - climatic change,
plankton distribution etc. The scope of research of this
station will no doubt change in time to keep up with the
pace of development in science and technology. This unique
area within Malaysia continental shelf in the South China
Sea offers tremendous opportunities for research. The scope
of research includes:
Coral reef ecosystem studies.
-
The study of physics and geoscience.
-
Biological resources and ecosystem studies e.g. tuna,
seagrass, turtle and seabirds.
-
The survey of alternative energy resource from deep sea
area, e.g. OTEC (Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion).
-
Offshore aquaculture.
