History The Freshwater Fisheries Research Centre (FFRC) which is situated in Batu Berendam, Melaka, Malaysia, is one of the branches of the Fisheries Research Institute, in Batu Maung, Pulau Pinang. FFRC is the only organisation in the Department of Fisheries Malaysia that deals with freshwater fisheries. The Centre, initially known as the Tropical Fish Culture Research Institute (TFCRI) was officially opened on 21st August, 1957 under the British Colonial Government.
It was to serve the needs of all the Tropical Commonwealth Countries in the field of tropical fish culture. On 31st December, 1970, the Centre was handed of Malaysia and administered by the Department of Fisheries as caretaker until 1st January, 1972 when it was transferred to the Malaysian Agriculture Research and Development Institute (MARDI). On 1st September, 1983 the Centre was functionally transferred back to the Department of Fisheries and on 1st June, 1984 the formal transfer was actually affected, with the centre becoming a branch of the Fisheries Research Institute. In 1996 the Centre has been renamed as the Freshwater Fisheries Research Centre (FFRC) in line with its expanded functions which include riverine and lake fisheries resources management. TheFreshwater Fisheries Research Centre will be divided into three main centres that is The Aquarium Fish & Aquatic Plant Research Centre, Fish Breeding & Culture Research Centre and Inland Fisheries Research Centre.
