General information of IKAN TENGALAN (Puntius bulu)

Background

Generally this specie is found to inhabit the major rivers of the State of Pahang, Perak, Johor, Kelantan, Selangor and in the Lake Temenggor, Chenderoh in Perak and Lake Cini in Pahang. Although they can be found in this area their population is dwindling due to the uncontrolled human activities that destroys most of its breeding grounds.

Morphology

The body conformation is similar to the Ikan Lampam Jawa (Puntius gonionotus). Body coloration is olive green. Has many interstitial bones. The body weight can exceed 3.0kg with the total length exceeding 50 centimeters.

Feeding habits

Being an omnivore its diet consists mainly of vegetation and readily accepts supplementary feeding with pelleted food.

Distribution

This species can also be found in Sumatera, Borneo and Thailand.

Economic Importance

Fetches high price especially in the states of Pahang. Perak , Kelantan and Sarawak. The market price for West Malaysia is between RM15.00-RM45.00 while in Sarawak the price could reached RM85.00

Future prospect

Due to the high market value and its acceptance by the local population, it is very likely that this specie will be in demand for aquaculture in the next millenium.
