Study conducted
Far from being a depauperate
ecosystem, peat swamps possess an interesting fish fauna, which is diverse and unique,
having narrow niches and restricted ranges. These species however are vulnerable and may
face risks of extinction as the peat swamp areas are being cleared.
The past tin dredging activities in Dengkil, Selangor has created numerous large water bodies. The numerous and relatively deep disused mining pools provide new homes for the indigenous fish species from the neighbouring streams and canals and subsequently to colonize.
Realising the importance of conserving these fish species and rehabilitation of degraded ex-mining peat swamp, Department of Fisheries together with Malaysian Wetlands Foundation, initiated a 5 months survey of fish species and the study of physicochemical properties of Paya Indah Wetlands Sanctuary. The results from the study will help the management to establish proper plans and reasonable conservation of the wetlands. Only when we know what is present can proper plans and decision be made and reasonable conservation established.
The study was conducted from April to August 1999 with a budget of RM 25,000.
